Remembering Jo Cox

On her birthday today, Oxfam staff remember Jo Cox, who died of her injuries following an attack in England last Thursday, June 16, 2016.

She was a British Member of Parliament and worked for Oxfam between 2001 and 2009 in a variety of different roles. As head of Oxfam International (OI) 's Brussels office, she spearheaded Oxfam's global campaign on trade justice. In 2005 she joined Oxfam Great Britain as head of advocacy. Her commitment to humanitarian issues led her to become head of humanitarian campaigns for Oxfam International in New York in 2007 for two years.

Jo never lost her passion for peace, justice and equality, in particular, she was a passionate advocate on humanitarian issues including the conflicts in Darfur and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Trini Leung, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong (OHK) and former colleague at Oxfam Great Britain said: ‘I can’t describe the heaviness we feel. We stand in solidarity with Jo’s family, especially her two children.’

Jo met her husband, Brendan who also worked for Oxfam.

‘Our hearts go out to her family for their indescribably painful loss. We must work hard to ensure that the light she shone in the world will continue to be carried by us all,’ said Josephine Chesterton, OHK’s Council Chair, as she expressed her condolences.

Lo Chi Kin, OHK representative in the Board of Supervisors of OI, added: ‘Jo’s tragic death is a big loss to the communities she serves and her co-workers in the global justice movement. It is important for us to carry on Jo’s good work to make this world a better and safer place.’
