Oxfam Trailwalker (OTW), Hong Kong’s most popular hiking fundraising event organized by Oxfam Hong Kong, was kicked off this morning (14 November). The Official Kick-off Ceremony was officiated by Bernard Chan, Chair of Oxfam Trailwalker Advisory Committee, and Stephen Fisher, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong.

The new “Oxfam Trailwalker 2014 – Leaders against Poverty Walk” was launched on the first day of the event. More than 20 business leaders, including Zhu Qi, Executive Director and CEO of Wing Lung Bank, Lau Ming Wai, Chairman & CEO of Chinese Estates Holdings Limited, and Shirley Yuen, CEO of The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, walked from Sai Kung Pak Tam Chung to the pavilion at start of High Island Reservoir West Dam all in the name of putting an end to poverty.

Bernard Chan said, ‘This year’s theme is ”Partnership. The True Trailwalking Spirit.” A total of 1,300 teams - around 5,200 participants - must walk over 20 hills and mountains for 100 km along the rugged MacLehose Trail and other trails within 48 hours. Through teamwork and mutual support, no challenge will be too big to overcome for each team of four. This year’s theme also echoes Oxfam’s mission to mobilise the power of people to fight for a world without poverty. Our target this year is to raise HK$31 million, all of which will be used to support Oxfam’s poverty alleviation, humanitarian and advocacy work to achieve a world without poverty.” He also expressed his gratitude to all the guests, walkers, volunteers, donors, sponsors and government departments for their support over the past years.

Oxfam Trailwalker has been held since 1981, and has become Oxfam Hong Kong's flagship fundraiser and one of the largest fundraising hiking events in Hong Kong, with the support of State Street, which has been the principal sponsor for 16 years. Since 1986, more than 81,000 trailwalkers have participated and raised over HK$422 million to support Oxfam’s poverty alleviation work all over the world.

The event has successfully developed into an international top-notch fundraiser. This year it is held in 16 cities in 10 countries including Australia (Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney), Belgium, England (South Downs, Yorkshire Dales), France, India (Bangalore, Mumbai), Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain (Girona, Madrid) and Hong Kong.
