Relief efforts continue to focus on the needs of remote areas and marginalised groups

On 22 July 2013, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the border of Minxian County and Zhangxian County in Dingxi City, Gansu, at a depth of 20 km. As of 2 pm today (24 July), 95 people have been killed and over 1000 people injured. A total of 900,000 people have been affected; 227,000 people have been evacuated. Over 300,000 houses toppled or suffered damage, incurring a financial loss of almost 7.5 billion yuan.

Oxfam Hong Kong promptly responded to the disaster and completed an initial damage assessment with its local partners (including local NGOs and government) in Meichuan Town, Minxian County. This evening, Oxfam Hong Kong will deliver relief supplies from its emergency warehouse in Lanzhou to Meichuan Town. These supplies include 120 tents, 500 quilts, 500 blankets and 500 folding beds.

Oxfam Hong Kong has launched a public appeal in response to the earthquake in Minxian County, Gansu. We aim to raise HK$1 million.

Meanwhile, several provinces in China including Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi have been ravaged by heavy rain and serious flooding. As of mid-July, the floods have killed 99 people in the three provinces; over 5.69 million people have been affected and 452,000 people have been evacuated. More than 50,000 houses toppled or were seriously damaged.

Oxfam Hong Kong is planning to deliver emergency supplies such as flour, cooking oil, hygiene kits, quilts, tents and waterproof fabrics for temporary shelter to the impoverished people in the affected regions, hoping to restore their basic needs. Oxfam Hong Kong also plans to allocate about 3 million yuan to the relief and early rehabilitation efforts in the three affected provinces.

Oxfam Hong Kong has also launched a public appeal for this disaster.
