Oxfam responds to Nepal earthquake: people of Nepal in dire need Follow-up will focus on more remote areas

The massive earthquake that struck Nepal on 25 April 2015 has already claimed more than 5,000 lives and left many injured. The United Nations says that 8 million people, more than a quarter of the population, have been affected by the earthquake. The people of Nepal are in dire need of shelter, clean water, food and medical treatment.

Oxfam responded immediately to the disaster. We aim to provide aid to at least 350,000 people affected by the earthquake and have assessment teams working in hard-to-reach rural areas. Our teams are battling logistical challenges such as blocked roads to reach rural communities in remote districts.

Latest update on Oxfam’s response in Nepal

We are providing water and pit toilets to earthquake survivors living in four open-air camps in Kathmandu Valley – Kirtipur, Tundikhel, Sinamangal and Lagankhel. .

  • In Kirtipur camp we have distributed tarpaulins for emergency shelter to 90 families and distributed 45,000 litres of chlorinated water for safe drinking.
  • In Tundikhel camp, one of the biggest camps in Kathmandu with around 15,000 people sheltering there, an 11,000-litre water tank has been installed and 20 pit toilets constructed.
  • 20 latrines are being built in Sinamangal camp.
  • 6,500 litres of water has been distributed in Lagankhel Army camp.
  • We are currently working with the Nepalese government and other agencies to plan how to provide clean water and sanitation to more than 34,000 people living in all 16 open-air sites in the Kathmandu Valley as quickly as possible.

Oxfam response teams have arrived in Gorkha District, the worst-affected area close to the earthquake’s epicentre on 28 April, and Sindhupalchok District on 29 April for rapid assessments of the level of need in the villages. Over the coming days, we will explore how to provide food and shelter to survivors and send teams to more remote districts.
